Digital pathology is becoming more widely used in clinical practice. More generally, there is also a trend to extract genomic and proteomic information from primary tissues at a single cell level. Recently developed technologies enable this type of analysis while preserving the overall integrity of the tissue.Imaging plays a crucial role as it establishes the context of the individual cell and the overall architecture of the tissue.
Here we present a set of image analysis concepts for generating tissue maps that effectively enable the linking of the extracted information. This summary discusses examples of novel biological methods for tissue cytology and new algorithms that have been developed at GE Global Research to enable quantitative analysis of such complex specimens.
